American has some of the most beautiful natural scenery in the world, and when it is combined with excellent highways, it makes for great scenic road trips.

1 The Pacific Coast Highway (PHC), California is considered the number one scenic drive in America. Starting at the southern tip of Baja California in Mexico, it stretches 500 miles to the top of the Olympic peninsula in Washington State. From San Diego to the Redwood Forest is a two week drive and passes through some of the best scenery in the world.

2 Haines Highway, Alaska and Canada, formerly known as the Yukon Highway, travels 45 miles in Alaska and the rest, about 107 miles, in British Columbia. It starts at Haines, Alaska and ends at Haines Junction, Yukon, Canada. This is the trip to take when you want to get away from it all. You will travel through jagged mountains and true wilderness. The Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve is a state park and wildlife refuge especially for bald eagles as well as up to 4000 birds during the Fall Congregation.

3 The Bicentennial Scenic Byway, Utah is in the southeast region of the state and is a portion of the Trail of the Ancients National Scenic Byway. The road is 121 miles long and begins at the junction of U.S. Route 191 and ends in the town of Hanksville. It passes through the stark beauty of the red rock formations and plateaus as well as crossing the Colorado River and Lake Powell and the Natural Bridges National Monument with three natural bridges including the second largest natural bridge in the world.

4 The Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina and Virginia is a very popular scenic drive. It is 469 miles along the Blue Ridge Mountains that are part of the Appalachian Mountains. It begins in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and ends in the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia and connects to the Skyline Drive. The drive offers spectacular views of the ancient mountains, rivers, lakes, valleys and gorges and historical buildings. There is ample camping and picnicking areas as well as the Blue Ridge Music Center where there are concerts of old time music.

5 Called the Highway that goes to the Sea, U.S.1 Florida Keys Overseas Highway literally does end at land’s end. It is also a modern wonder and looks like a ribbon of highway stretching out across the ocean. It is 113 miles long with 42 overseas bridges that link the Florida Keys. The trip can be done in four hours, but this is not recommended because there is so much to do and see along the way. Sea-bird habitats, the ocean in a myriad of colors, mangrove forests, fishing, boating and other water sports are just a few of the activities available on this magic carpet that ends in Key West, famous for its vibrant cultural life, local artisans and historical sites as well as the famous Sunset Celebration.

The scenic drives in America offer examples and experiences from a selection of vastly different natural environments. The stark wilderness of Alaska, to the stark beauty of the desert as well as the lush forests of Appalachia and the beautiful Pacific Coast are just a few of the possibilities awaiting visitors on their next road trip.
